This does not appear to be a bug in mailx. I was just able to install
it on Gutsy with no issue. The key phrase in the error message is
"Read-only file system". For some reason dpkg thought the file system
was read only at that point. Concentrate on figuring out why that was
the case.

It appears the underlying problem is the install getting messed up with
partitioning/swap - I fought with this and this was my soultion:
boot live CD
open Konsole
execute "sudo su -" (this will put you at the command prompt as root)
execute "passwd root"
enter a password for root
type "exit"

the current Gutsy gnupg2 (I haven't installed the test package yet).
