It seems that this problem was actually related to firestarter.
Something in firestarter changed after the upgrade. I could see in
/var/log/syslog that there were dropped packets. When I uninstalled
firestarter and rebooted my connection worked.
However, packets are going out on the wireless
CrawfordBest: please try with 7.10 beta if it works better. You can
change the dualhead-settings using xrandr (man xrandr). Cloned mode is
used by default I think.
others: mergedfb and xinerama-support has been deprecated in favor of
randr-1.2.

Updating HPLIP to the newest version (it was 2.7.7 I think), using their
installer-script for Ubuntu, causes sane to finally recognize the
scanner.

I notice that the Tor package on Debian is up to date. Is there much difference
between the package of Debian Ubuntu ?

I can confirm that the latest kernel release does suspend properly on
the Portege M500.
However, I checked out the changes made to the code after gusnz's comment about

I'm using a luks encryped USB-HDD, which worked perfectly with Feisty.
But with Gutsy the HDD does not get automounted reliably.
Most oft the time it just works for the first time when the HDD is plugged in.
Which means:
