A friend of mine was recently bit by this bug too. They also upgraded
to 7.04 from 6.10. After the upgrade, the system would simply hang at
the busy cursor while loading GDM. To correct the problem on their
machine I purged gdm and ubuntu-desktop (since it depends on gdm) and
reinstalled them.

I solved my problem : having installed ubuntu from an usb key, there was
a CD-ROM entry /dev/sdb1 in my fstab, which is the usual reference of
any external device I might plug.

Just tried the latest gutsy kernel on amd64 on a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4797
with the latest gutsy backport modules.
Both sound playback and recording work fine. Recording quality is quite poor
though. =/ Recompiling alsa-drivers 1.0.15rcX from sources seems to provide
better recording
Odd. I'm closing the bug for now as there's nothing I can do without
syslog, but if the bug reappears, please feel free to reopen this report
and attach /var/log/syslog.

I just did a fresh install on a blank OEM hard drive from a USB drive.
It meshed my hard drive and USB into one drive one time, and on a
separate attempt to install it, it read the drive as USB flash as well.
When I set the jumper on my hard drive to master, the problem went away.

freeze occurred because the update manager removed my flash

I just tried to reproduce it without any local network traffic (besides
directly from my router to the internet) and it went for 4:50 and then I
had to shutdown but I think it would keep going but no crash without
local traffic (ie. to a server)
