Following an upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10, my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop is no
longer capable of using the external monitor, a Dell SE198WFP widescreen

i have the same problem. the only problem with it is, i want to be able
to use the visual effects. i know, i'll just have to live without them.
but here's the strange thing:
I was using visual effects (in 7.10), and they worked just fine. I must
have done something to mess them up. The only thing
I can confirm unggnu's observation:
If I have TMDS-1 output to an external monitor, and LVDS disabled, then

A Pentium D is a dual core CPU. It is two Pentium 4E stuck together for
the 800 series. I have an 830.
Anyway, this can be closed. It turned out to be an ACPI issue. It

everything is working correctly. I wished I saved a dmesg
32 bit here.

I set the CONCURRENCY=shell and the HAL problem came back. rc2.d stayed at
S12dbus this time, no S50dbus
Set CONCURRENCY=none, rebooted and HAL is working again.
The boot process is still slower than I remember in Feisty. I'll bet
there still is a tweek somewhere to fix the real problem.

Yeah, that's right. However, I wasn't able to do this from the Update
Manager GUI; I had to do it with aptitude from the command line (the nfs
package was greyed out in Update Manger).

Hello, I am also getting this issue.
Ubuntu 7.10 works fine. Except I don't get any loading bar (blank screen),
