I have the same issue on an HP dv9000, with AMD Turion 64x2 TL-56.
The same issue was present in Ubuntu 7.04.

If switching to metacity doesn't free up the memory it's a problem with
xorg. If switching to memory _does_ fix the problem you've probably got
an nvidia card and are hitting an nvidia bug that makes it look like
compiz is leaking.
