I'm now using fresh installed Gutsy with standards depots packages (Gnucash +
xgl + compiz + proprietary ati driver) and it still happens.

It's not a media quality problem. A Canonical copy failed to load and
a slowly burnt and verified alternate CD gave a subtly different Linux
failure to load into RAM. Note that all the CDs load without any
problem for Windows XP inspection.
