Hooray - issue solved by update this morning!
This morning there was a Samba update to samba 3.0.27a-1ubuntu1.
After that things merged and everything works fine. I have samba installed and
my files shared.

I concur with Pekka.
Here, doing "ip addr" or "ifconfig" indeed reported that lo has no IP,
so I inspected /etc/network/interfaces and, sure enough, there was no
stanza for the lo interface. Having fixed this and rebooted, everything
seems back to normal. Kiitoksia, Pekka!

Glad it's been nominated for Dapper..but not sure if it will get

That is the way it is supposed to work when the 'Configure Dolphin ->
Save view properties for each folder' checkbox is unchecked. Once you
enable this, you can start saving view profiles for each folder.
Otherwise it'll switch back to the default view configured in Configure
Dolphin -> Default Vi
