Just to confirm this keeps happening on more then a few of the systems here, this could be attributed to gconfd-2 or applets I guess... It seems gconf-d is not stopping and then on reload applets dont work. killing gconfd-2 and removing temp files with the word gconf in the /tmp dir seems to fix.
