I have just upgraded to hardy and now it works flawlessly.
I've just launched sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg and the file it
created works well (I suppose that now it's autodetecting everything, since it
didn't ask me anymore for my video card and monitor).

I've just tried to install alpha3 on kvm myself, and it does indeed
fail. The failsafeDexconf -issues are fixed now in git, but the real
problem is why it ended up there. It tries to use the cirrus driver, but
it fails to configure itself properly. I used the xorg.conf from

I can confirm the bug in 7.10 on AMD64. The machine is a Compaq Presario V5000.
