I just rebooted under Gutsy and updated it.
Hotswapping still works with Gutsy, but it seems that I was wrong about
the host ID being consistent. The host ID is shifting with Gutsy too.

Saïvann is correct I found out about the bug #173890 when I was trying to
install Flash on Firefox, apt did stop the install but it did not report it to
the Synaptic Packet Manager.

I believe that I booted from an older livecd that did work, then I mounted
my hard disk in that running instance and used chroot to go into the hard
disk filesystem and ran apt-get from there.
Something like this:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/mydrive
cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/mydrive/etc/resolv.conf

I do an tune2fs -c 1 to force a check everytime the volume is
mounted.
My setup still is without errors, but I don't use my persistent thumbdrive that
often (maybe once every two weeks or so).

Right, this appears (unsurprisingly) to be a mutex contention issue, on
the file-specific mutex.
