yet another update: i've adapted the configuration to the laptop (that

#221973 Was required in hardy because else it won't start after a reboot. When
fixing that one I noticed that a upgrade to that "patched" version failed
because of another bug. This bug (#224241) is now fixed in 3.0.
Nominating for hardy, but dropping the 8.04.1 milestone; diversions are
very tricky and I'm not sure that this bug is fixable at all except by
removing and then re-installing the nvidia-glx package, because you
simply cannot remove a diversion while the package is installed which
provides a file of

Solved!
The problem appears to have been because update-initramfs failed when
installing the new kernel.
This was because I'd had issues with the udev rules that were installed after
upgrading to 8.04 so I'd replaced /etc/udev/rules.d with my backup.

The fix suggested Ken on 2007-12-29 worked fine for me on 7.10 on a Dell
PE840, but the selfsame patch doesn't work now I've upgraded to 8.04

I believe that this is fixed originally 1:2.4.1~rc1-1ubuntu1 in hardy-
proposed. I will have to double check with a broken file to verify it is
corrected.
