about a week and assumed one of the upgrades had fixed it - now its "blank blue
and the mouse " again - using 8.04. The hibernate function is now failing too.

Yes we have linux-headers-* installed, and the asm/bitops.h isn't there
(the asm directory isn't even).
For this particular problem I have found a workaround using C's builtin
atomic memory functions, but I suspect that the bitops method is a
little cleaner/lighter.
Incidentally, we are not using
the gksudo stopped working for me too but I just changed the gksudo to
sudo and well, it's working again, sigh

This method is pretty "real world", but it will cycle through the savers
at random so you need to let it run a long time before you have covered
all the savers. First choose "Random" in the Screensaver preference.
Then run this and do not touch the computer:

I've tried this on several Systems including Dapper Drake with OOo 2.0.
Every tested version of OOo has this problem but neither KDE- nor
Gnome-applications.

run into it. I still haven't determined what causes the problem, but my
guess would be it chooses some unusual plugin that can decode mp3 but
can't handle seeking, rather than a more common one that can do both.
