I can confirm this bug. The same problem occurs when you use "metacity
--replace" or "compiz --replace". fusion-icon does not recognize which

This was indeed very unpleasant bug to discover after spending money to
raid disks, new server hardware. Now that the server is up and running,
doing it all again with Debian doesn't feel that great option either. I
hope I get it booting correctly with some instructions given here.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of
life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft
kernel task. If someone else has this issue in the current version of
Ubuntu, they should start a new bug report with the appropriate package.
