I've not that hardware anymore and I suppose the problem is gone in
Hardy since my dual head works fine (only it's very slow).

It seems to be related to flash. A window or tab with Flash content

Sorry, I've learnt a lot since reporting this bug.
The bug still exists, but it is in the linux kernel, from v4l-dvb saa7134 driver
and is to to do with the i2c section.
Thus, it will carry on with all new releases.

It seems I may just be in trouble then. From your command I got :
E:dpkg failed to load, you need to manually run "dpkg --configure -a" to
correct the problem.
After running this I'm told that this operation requires superuser
privileges (after logging in with password & all)

Confirmed, works for me with new gtk package.
Thanks for following up on this with the GTK folks and a quick
turnaround on the fix.. it makes writing work email on this machine a
little less of an adventure ;)

I also see the behavior on my Thinkpad X41 with a fully-updated (as of
today) Hardy.
It's intermittent - happens most often after a suspend/resume cycle or
two. Anything we could do to try and track down what's causing this?
