Larry, It's working now. I rewrote the SPROM, but that alone wasn't enough. I had to reinstall the driver as per http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware. Then reboot, and everything was ok. I didn't go through any intensive testing (enable/disable the wireless via the laptop
