Nope, I don't have the problem now. It was related to the network card
on my motherboard using a Realtek 8110 chipset. In Ubuntu 7.10 I
resolved the problem by using the Realtek driver from their web site
problem in Ubuntu 8.10 when starting a 1TB HDD USB at a very slow
laptop. I think its a reply timeout in combination with my slow laptop.

Testing the Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 Alpha 6 livecd, indicates that the problem
remains at least in the LiveCDs. I was unable to either reboot or
shutdown from the System menu. Was able to shutdown using the terminal:

I am using Intrepid amd64 now. Trying to start gramps now shows the
following output and then hangs without opening the GUI. It can not get
killed by Ctrl-C, but by SIGTERM.
