I've got this too. Seldomly the screensaver hangs when I want to login back.
It happens with more frequence if I leave an image moving, i.e. not a balck

I've now tested the oct 22 desktop live CD. On my machine with a
"Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H" it boots right into compiz. Previously I got a
hang right after login so this is a big improvement.
I've got got the updates on my laptop which got a 965 intel and no
regressions there that I can see.

I Just tried installing the ATI 8.10 drivers again. This time it worked.
Wierd. Athough ATI does not claim to support the 46xx cards on their
driver page, I remember seeing a webpage claiming that support was added
in 8.9. Hardy's xserver-xorg-video-ati is 6.8.0-1. Presumably Intrepid
will have 8

The options in the default config conflict preventing the encrypted
partition being mounted, 'allow_others' conflicts with 'allow_root'.
Also the option 'user_allow_others' needs to be enabled in /etc/fuse.conf
