I have this problem also.
SD card mounts fine (hal auto-mounts it)
can't format it in gparted, probably because fdisk -l doesn't show it
Problem started when I upgraded to Intrepid, on Hardy it worked.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: ttf-arphic-uming
Ubuntu 8.10, under en_US locale, installed both ttf-arpic-uming and ttf-
wqy-zenhei, Uming becomes the default sans-serif face for Chinese
instead of ttf-wqy-zenhei as in 8.04.
fc-match outputs are attached.
Oh well if I am the only one affected from this bug it is of no use to start
looking into the problem. Please mark this bug invalid and hopefully it will
be fixed in the next version (I am really praying god). By the way I
stumbled upon another bug a couple of days ago I strongly suspect it is in

Not sure why this bug didn't get closed with the sync, but 1.1.0.dfsg-1
is in the archives now.

sync 1.1.0.dfsg-1 from Debian
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/196660
You received this bug notification because
I've let the system not install any updates for a couple of weeks, then
blasted them all at once (the only thing that seems to trigger this) and
neither an update of 86 or so files nor the version update to Intrepid
(1600 or so files) resulted in any such failures, so it may be fixed.

1. I did get this to work following suggested configurations from the
ubuntu community.
I will follow up with the exact changes in a subsequent email.
2. I am running the 64-bit version of ubuntu although I don't think
that matters
here. 32-bit versus 64-bit is irrelevant to the issue.

This happens with desktop effects on or off. The quick solution is to
switch to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), login, and type 'sudo killall
tsclient', then hit Ctrl+d to logout.
