Just wanted to add an update. As I kept peeling the layers of this
issue, I found that the problem appeared to be with AGP. I am using a
nVidia 6800 GT AGP card. If I take a fresh install of 8.10 then add the
nVidia 177 bundled drivers I get a black screen on boot. However, if I

It seems that this problem was tied to pulseaudio. Searching in the
forums gave "killall pulseaudio" which caused it to restart and player
works properly now as well as Pidgin hangs have been corrected

I've tried recreating your test case multiple times without success,
every time I close the tab the process being executed is killed. I'm
also really not clear why you confirmed the bug when you say "I no
longer use gnome-terminal but it's easily reproduced." Please either

No, I don' think its the hardware because I used it on Windows with no
problems whatsoever for a year before I chose to switch to Xubuntu.
Where are you getting the Windows driver, what windows version are you
using, also is it 64 or 32 bit? Try one of these:

Okay, I've done the backports. Most of the items in the list are one-liners
that I consider safe, but the primary reason for this work -- backporting the
overdownloading bug -- is (as predicted) a monster 1400 line diff. Who knows
how much QA is needed for that, especially since most of our activ
For the record, upstream wasn't happy with my original approach, so I
updated the patch and the -common infrastructure, and sent it upstream
again. I'll wait for some more feedback before I upload, just to avoid
having people actually put it in use and then having it to change later.
