Hi, I'm having this same problem on a Gateway MX6440 laptop too. The
symptoms are similar, I am able to use keyboard functions to adjust the
brightness, but not the applet. I've loaded the "dcdbas" kernel module
as suggested by this thread, but it has not helped.

I've been having problems with the 8169 driver and RTL8111/8168B network

I would suggest either not building this package for 64-bit targets or
building a 32-bit version of it for 64-bit targets (like the wine
package). Both approaches would "fix" this bug.

Not nVidia-only, I have the same on an Intel-based laptop
(FujitsuSiemens Lifebook S7110).
get-edid and ddcprobe fail, however everything works out of the box... I
discovered this because xdpyinfo reports dpi and screen physical size
incorrectly...

No longer an issue with KDE 4 in Jaunty. I have already changed that
main index file anyways, as it will eliminate many other problems as

For Jaunty I am getting rid of this nasty docbook table layout for
something much simpler and works on everyones system. The problem from
this is the table layout stuff in docbook, as it is a hit-or-miss
situation. Unfortunately for everyone in this report, it was definitely
a miss and I apologize

Thank you for your help!! I created an /etc/asound.conf file following
your directions and changed the appropriate line to read:
slave.pcm "hw:Intel,0"
I did that because Skype lists "hw:Intel,0" as one of its available
sound devices. In other words, the changed line now references th
now that i think about it, how did this work in firefox 2? i am a bit
unsure how exactly the semantics is supposed to be.

I tested in Intrepid the xserver-xorg-video-intel -
2:2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid deb and I am still seeing this bug.
Here is a new log in the "bad" case with "ModeDebug Yes".
As I said in my last comment: switching to a VT and back to X is a workaround
(So the log also shows up the "good"

Selecting 'Guest session' from the Fast User Switch applet ('Fast User
Switch Applet 2.24.0') causes the laptop to lock up. The screen is
black, the system does not respond to any keystrokes and the only way to
resume normal operation is to power-cycle the machine.
