Fixed! Seems that your manual workaround did not fix my issue, but
that the package updates did. Quite strange. Here's what was
updated...
The following packages will be upgraded:

Some more stumbling shows that one of the few places where the bi_size is
increased is
fs/bio.c, function __bio_add_page .
While I'm not sure what this function does exactly, I find the check in line
311 somewhat disturbing:

return 0;
