boxes? That's wrong, since the dialog boxes won't go automatically the
same way than notification bubbles go.

Nicolò, the DPI is probably correct (you can measure it yourself to be
sure). The problem is that all the default fonts in Ubuntu are way too
big, because previously everyone defaulted to 96 DPI. That is why I
filed this bug, and I am re-opening it now that bug #157398 is fixed in
Jaunty.

I can also confirm this. Also, I think this is more related to the PCM volume
being muted and master not. When I mute the PCM channel I can hear this static
noise, but if I mute the master channel there is no static noise at all.
My volume keys on the keyboard are set to modify the PCM channel

Having the same thing here. New to Ubuntu/Linux as of yesterday so
can't shed much light.
AMD Athlon processor I think (few years old), ATI Radeon 9200 Graphics.
Following above advice I can see that:
