None of the files/directories you mention exist in Hardy, as far as I can tell.
Are you sure your suggestion is relevant for Hardy?
I also don't think it has anything to do with ext3 vs vfat. The problem
appears to be further up the chain. I have a hardy laptop at home that
mounts my vfat usb

There's a couple of disconnect/connect messages in regards to the
keyboard in the dmesg output. This is due to 1) After a suspend I have
to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard in order for it to work, and 2)
I disconnected the keyboard to try it with my laptop.

Have u checked the settings in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf? usbmount is
the package responsible for usb automount.
/etc/udev/rules.d/62-usbmount.rules calls /usr/share/usbmount/usbmount
to mount usb devices.
It took me ages to find out that it will only mount ext2 and ext3 filesystem

same bug here, clicking the bookmarks menu for the first time after
starting a firefox session displays the add to bookmark menu.
Oddly, clicking and holding the left button for a second before
releasing it makes the bookmarks display correctly.

OK, this bug has two parts: removing some "not so nice" Gnome themes and adding
New Wave and Dust.
Now it says "fixed", gnome-themes-selected contains only the "nice" Gnome
themes (part 1 done), but were are New Wave and Dust (part 2 of the bug)?
