Public bug reported:
I hope it is the correct package to report this bug.
I have a IBM T61 and a recent ubuntu jaunty.
I can start kdm with the 'nv' driver and I can run "startx" with the
'nvidia' driver. However, using the nvidia driver to start kdm does not
work. Syslog only tells me:

Re my prev. comments.
I decided to explore this through a process of elimination. The PC had 3
X 1T SATA HDDs (WD, Seagate, Samsung). There is 1 Seagate 320G ATA/IDE,
1 X DVD writer (IDE) and 1 X DVD Writer (SATA).
I took all drives out, leaving only the boot drive (1T Seagate SATA).

This can be fixed by replacing the assertion in TXScrollbar::set with
if (len_ > limit_) len_ = limit_;
such that TXScrollbar::set looks like this
void TXScrollbar::set(int limit_, int start_, int len_, bool vert)

// This assertion fails under certain window
I just found a way to get the lid switch to work under certain
conditions!
It's slightly bizarre and quite ironic.
Do a hibernation and then start up from hibernation. That made the lid
switch work in jaunty beta.
It also made the /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state change as expected.

It would be good to get the upstream fix for this into Jaunty, it's a
pretty nasty regression.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
As exemplified by bug #351187 it is possible to enter failsafe mode
after an X restart when the hardware is in an inconsistent state. In
such a case, no reconfiguration is required - I don't think there's a
way to reset the graphics hw in this case
