I've installed the recently updated ati-driver-
installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run and this problem is gone. Now, the screen
turns-off as expected.
So, this problem was originated from the previous ATI drivers, instead
from Ubuntu.

I have applied the fix to the Debian SVN repository and will soon upload

Since this is not a bug report on a program existing in ubuntu but a call for
help with compiling a newer version I'll convert the bug into a question.

Bug 380565 seems to describe the same issue with alsa-base 1.0.20+dfsg-
1ubuntu1, so perhaps this regression occurred with the 1.0.20 merge.

Thanks for reporting this issue. I installed cutecom in fresh installs
of Ubuntu 8.04 and Xubuntu 8.04. Neither one adds it to the menus.
However, Xubuntu 8.10 did add cutecom to the menu under Accessories.

The problem is that the script /etc/init.d/apport sets the PATH variable to
/bin. It then tries to use the runlevel command to stop itself, but runlevel is
in /sbin. The quick fix is to change the line:
PATH=/bin

I can confirm this error, and have identified the cause: there is a typo
in the preinst script of this new package.
On my (English, 64-bit) system, I see:
