If you're running Jaunty, you shouldn't need the dkms built kvm module.
The kvm in the Jaunty kernel should be good enough.
Try removing kvm-source, rebooting, and let me know if that solves your
immediate issue.
That said, your dmesg does indicate something of problem in the kvm-

Fresh Jaunty install fails on an Acer Aspire 5315 (Intel Celeron) for me
too. VLC runs the menu screen but then that's all. All the necessary
CODECs, libs etc. loaded.

I agree, a package sounds much more like an "archive" than what is
essential (from a new users perspective) an installer. On the other hand
package is established with more knowlegable users as is (to a lesser
extent) archive so unless we can think of a name which is actually

bring up Sugar. Xephyr and X start fine, but Sugar hangs after its
cursor appears on a black background, without ever showing the desktop

Okay, after all it seems to be a bug in alsa-driver. I suggest to
continue this here:

(For me, the solution was to install alsa-driver-linuxant, but for all
those who don't want to install a proprietary driver it would be great
if a solution is found)

See, I did an apt-get install xserverg-xorg-video-intel-2.4 just now,
and I can play the videos without any problem.
