OK, Lot's of help from wayne_cat and one of the peeps from wireless.org.
At the suggestion of their install page I also removed linux-backports
before sudo make install.Was able to build and install compat-
wireless-2009-07-12.tar.bz2 then rebooted the computer but still no
wireless.

Creating the policy file didn't work for me, however Vanessa's solution
posted on 2008-09-05 (running saned as root) did solve the problem. I'm

Apparently it's agreed by all of us that this bug is manifest using
nvidia (and ATI, and virtualbox, ?others?) drivers. But the 'trigger'

The issue here is that when ear candy starts it scans the list available
sound cards and locks onto the ether the last card or the card with usb
in the name..
My reasoning was that if you have a usb device plugged in you probably
