things.

At a guess, your Jaunty and Karmic installations disagree about whether
the hardware clock should be to tick localtime or UTC time, and one of
the things the shutdown scripts do is to set the hardware clock from the
system clock. This causes the time at boot up to be incorrect until
NTP has a cha

Indeed I did have when I generated those logs. I retried without an
external screen connected - same behaviour. Attaching yet another log
file.

I fixed it with sudo dpkg-reconfigure samba-common then dpkg --configure
-a
Not really sure why this worked or why it popped in my head to do this,
but it worked.

It happened all the time. You opened the box as described, and they
would be mixed up, as stated. Like a typo, only different.
Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore; it appears to be fixed.
