I suspect the compile failed because there have been over 100 updates sent out
for Karmic between the two compiles.
While the device was created, the driver did not work. No amount of tweaking
got wvdial to get a dial tone, but the phone line was tested with a regular

The sound preferences dialog has a hardware tab. There is an option:

This bug also occurs in Karmic Alpha 5.
I have tried the no backfill x-server, however it seemed that the
X-Server will eat more and more memory over time.
I'm really puzzled since this worked flawlessly in 8.04 :(.
