Daniel Holbert's Fix (added line Device "Default Device" under the
Screen section) worked perfectly both times.

Right. Update-manager now uses the synaptic backend again since we don't
think that aptdaemon can provide the same stability now. But as it will
improve things may change in the next release of Ubuntu.
The policy change was intended since it is now possible to set the
HttpProxy for a cache update.
this is not a general support forum, and we cannot support 3rd party
packages.
To me, this looks like a transient problem that has been fixed in the
mean time. Paul, do you agree?

It does look like bug #449582 to me. I was getting the beep in gnome-
terminal (and on receiving email and deleting files in nautilus) and I
had 'PC beep' set to 0 in alsamixer as well as system sounds set to

I have a gateway lt3103u (yay!)
and
AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)
running karmic 64-bit
The default kernel still gives me major issues.
With linux-backports-modules-karmic installed, things are better, but not fixed
by any means. It often takes around a minute for Ubuntu.com to

under KVM.

I am running on Ubuntu karmic (development branch) release 9.10.
If I run "sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1" from within a MultiTerm
buffer in Emacs, I am not prompted for the root password. Instead I see
