Just to further muddy the waters :)
I use openvpn, no private password. Been working pretty reliably on 8.10
and then 9.04 for a year. 9.10 was fine until most recent update, when
no secrets problem popped up. I was studying the synaptic history to see
if I could maybe guess which package broke

This problem happens when I close the laptop lid (in Lucid) and then open it:
the screen remains completely black until I repetely hit CTRL-ALT-F1
CTRL-ALT-F7 ...
Then the screen is restored and works well.

To use this patch you will have to know how to apply patches
compile a kernel properly. As you can see from previous posts it does work. We
are awaiting for the Ubuntu kernel team to integrate the patch into a kernel
that is easy to consume. That way you will not have to use

Update:
It seems the main reason for the slowness on Karmic is that Ubuntu
decreased the host timer frequency from 250Hz (Jaunty) to 100Hz
(Karmic). Supposedly making VirtualBox run really slow especially with
SMP.
So my question in the mean time is there a way to change this in Ubuntu
Karmic to

This is not the same problem as bug/427102 as that was apparently
resolved by moving from Net Manager to WICD. Switching to WICD did not
work for me.
My problem is that my Macbook Pro 5,5 running Karmic 64 is silently
dropping

it doesnt matter what device i am using. it doesnt work.
but in fact i am using the usb one (because thats my headset). in sound
preferences i turned off the internal device off completely ... still
arecord/aplay does work, while it doesnt work in linphone, twinkle ekiga

just a curses app ...

Confirming.. This bug is certainly not incomplete, it's very
reproducible. The cover editor text disappears and re-appears seemingly
at random while editing. Selecting text makes it appear always. Very
buggy.
