Unfortunately the fixing of bug #491483 means that its going to be
difficult to reproduce. However I do suspect that the problem with
failsafe selecting the wrong resolution (with 2.6.31 kernels) on my
machine hasn't gone away. Its just hidden until the next time X /
upstart breaks.

In general, in Lucid the hpijs driver is replaced by an hpcups driver
which is based on a completely new code base. There this bug should not
occur. Try it with a live CD

I am still seeing this problem on Ubuntu 9.10. The real problem is that
when this happens (as near as I can tell), my system becomes
unresponsive to network traffic. However, when I go to the console (via
KVM) and simply press enter, everything returns to normal.

Yes, that worked for me too, using the Mini 100c!
But you don't have to install the alsa sound package.
Just
- install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
- reboot
- open a terminal, enter alsamixer, press tab, and set both internal and
front mic sliders to 100%
- press esc
That's it.
Everything is working Ok except for the fact that I am getting these oops
messages every time I boot, even after regular shutdown.

A small observation since i filed bug #388290, the current driver works fine
for me on compaq v2000 series.
The only exception is that the lights on my pci card doen't work like they used
to be. Earlier the rx and tx lights used to blink to show activity. Now I see
only one steady light on

No, it does not work out of the box with Karmic. It attempts to use driver
rt2800usb which is incorrect for the RT3070 chip so it fails.. Do you want
me to file a new bug or continue the old one?
