had the same problem in Ubuntu 9.10 64bit .
Uninstalling pulseaudio and the mic is ok in my windows xp guest.
I had to do a
apt-get purge pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio + the rest of my packages
related to pulse (found via dpkg -l | grep pulse),
except i still got libpulse-browse0

It's a known bug that I introduced upstream, it's been fixed upstream
but the new version is not yet in Ubuntu (basically a typo in one of our
init scripts function cause the script to crash and not start ldm).

Apparently talking to ogra this is the desired behaviour if the ldm
hasn't loaded so this bug is fallout from 494993 and I am closing
because of it.

This is now re-occurring with Lucid since very early in the development
cycle and has been persistent over the last few kernel updates. I will
try and isolate the kernel version in which this first occurred
(although I suspect it was when the first 2.6.32 landed)

This feature request is now almost one year old.
xfs support extents and defrag since long time, but it doesn't support shrink
operations.
ext4 support shrink and extents, but doesn't have defrag.
What will come first? Defrag on EXT4 or shrink on XFS?
