This happens to me too with Karmic on an Asus EeePC 1000H netbook : if I
switch to VT (CTRL+ALT+F1) and then back to X (ALT+F7) then the netbook

I have found a workaround, and appear to have repaired my original user
account's settings. I found by comparing the various settings files and
folders that the bad user had a file named ~/.config/monitors.xml but
the newly created and usable user did not.

When fsck runs on boot it triggers a failsafe x session every time on
all of my machines running lucid. Coupled with the fact failsafeX uses
vesa which does not work when i915 is loaded with KMS as well as the
fact fsck's happen without any visual fee

But is it really an ALSA problem? The mic works fine with ALSA, but it
doesn't when PA is supposed to use the mic.
I just really hope this gets fixed for 10.04 because it seems like it
isn't terribly hard to fix, since it's already half-working (with alsa
