Since the message that started all this was about 'statd pre-start process
(846) terminated with status 1', I finally found one bug # 484209 which likely
is the cause for my observed NFS mount problem. I will try to confirm later.

After having these problems initially in 9.10, I downgraded to 9.04.
I have tried these freezetest kernels, in 9.04, for a few weeks now and
have not had a single crash. Please let me know if there's anything else
I can do to help troubleshoot this issue.

I believe that I'm running into this bug attempting install Ubuntu
Studio Karmic/9.10. I did not run into this problem whem installing
from the normal alternate installs for Karmic and Lucid (I need to use
