I've solved the thing for me.
I got help by Jacco de Leeuw's informations
(http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/linux-l2tp.html) and made an installation
script. I've tested it under 9.10 Karmic and it is working fine. Here you can
download my script:

Apparently this bug has disappeared. Right now, Linux Kernel
2.6.28-11-generic is installed, and everything works as it should. I'll
test this again with a newer kernel.

As expected, I was able to boot the new kernel a few times, and then
just as I felt comfortable enough with it to edit my menu.list, it
stopped loading.
Mind you, I've been trying to set it to 0, as per the commented-out
instructions:

We should mention this in the release notes, yes. I'll open a bug task.
The obvious difference between "Try" and booting straight through is
that the latter uses a custom display manager implementation rather than
gdm. I wonder if we're failing to handle interaction with plymouth
correctly?
