I see this behaviour as well.
It downloads in the background but does not show when they are available
to update.
An apt-get update results in update-manager showing but now instead of
going to the notification area as it did previously when closed with
updates unapplied it just closes.

Same problem for me. Resizing and other functions work, but gthumb
crashes when I try to save. Also got the message that the crash could
not be reported on when I tried that.

Alternately, you could pop up a big scary debconf warning... there's
ample precedent for that.

Today update to mountall 2.9 don't fix the problem.
I use temporary solution. To /etc/rc.local append 'mount -a' command. If
"Waiting for.." message appear I simply press S.

Confirmed that using the appearance manager as root does not crash.
Will not allow us to change settings for the primary user account though
and therefore most settings are not changeable for the average user.

I've found an alternative method for successfully using the USB key that
doesn't require a custom keyscript, and it is probably the recommended
solution too!
1. Ensure there is an entry for the USB key device in /etc/fstab:
