I've installed the mainline kernel 2.6.34-999-generic and so far I

* adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters in grub
* using the vesa driver instead of the intel driver
* removing xorg.conf altogether
* turning off DRI
* disabling scim
* using a different user account

Yesterday when I did 'sudo gnome-power-manager' I got icon, but now it
shows when I'm on battery, but it disappears on AC. I attach another
gdm.log file. I started it on AC and then I unplugged AC (I marked it in
log with text: HERE I UNPLUGGED AC). And somewhere later I plugged in
AC again.

Okay, now I'm a little perplexed: The 10.04-desktop LiveCD booted first go
with the serial console attached (extra kernel options:
console=ttyS0,115200n8). Everything appeared okay except the machine didn't
actually power itself off.

VertRefresh 43-74
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It works, but it does not solve the issue since KDE does
not let me set another frequency than 60 Hz.
