I think this problem was introduced when kernel 2.6.31-20 was installed.
I first noticed it two days after that update.
I can't be absolutely sure because the problem is so unpredictable, but

On my lucid system with nVidia 8800GT
Adding:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1200
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1200
to /etc/default/grub
and
FRAMEBUFFER=y
to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
seems to work.
Grub is visible, plymouth is visible during boot (I haven't checked shutdown,
yet), and text consoles

FYI, it's fixed now for me. I had some problems between mpd and pulse
since the upgrade, maybe fixing that was what fixed it. I really don't
know at what point it was fixed, sorry :S

I noticed, and re-created in a consistent manner the CTRL-EVENT-
DISCONNECTED error by following these steps:
-get a wireless connection
-go to maps.google.ca
-pick an address, any address (say, eiffel tower, paris, france)

All right!! It seems to have fixed my issue :). Mem=1G allowed me to
boot the amd64 installer.

I think I'm experiencing a similar problem.
After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 tot 10.04 TB got also upgraded to
version 3.0.4 (3.0.4+nobinonly-0ubuntu4).
When I started the new version of TB some items of TB did not display
and the right pane holding the message list did not update when clicking
I had this very same issue, eval failed to change LC_MESSAGES
environment variable. Edited the postinst script slightly with midnight
commander (apt-get install mc). Instead of using eval, I used another
way of setting the environment variable.

I had said that the disconnection happened on some youtube videos, but I
wasn't bale to find one that make it consistently happen. Vimeo on the

(me!) says it affects them.
