This is happening to me too. Empathy-gabble and Empathy-butterfly
dueling to become the owner of my processor cycles. It happened this
time after a resume from suspend state. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 upgraded
to the date.
Once I kill the process Empathy-butterfly and let it restart, asking

If ck-lists-sessions has active = False or is-local = False for your
session then
the default policykit config won't let you do most actions.
If you are sat at the machine then it indicates something wrong, if you are over
vnc/ssh/nx or something then it is expected, if undesireable, behaviour.
THe workaround that I have tried with success is to disable the
OpenOffice quickstarter from the system tray. After this, the system
shuts down and reboots through the indicator applet shutdown button.
Can't figure this out because it was working fine with Karmic.

We use a PXE environment to deploy user laptops based on Ubuntu.
The installation process is a real pain due to this issue. Hardware is
stressed a lot, the hard drive of our notebooks are constantly making
grinding noises.
