notice that the lower "info" portion of the display still cycles
erratically.

I went into Synaptics to use the 'fix broken packages' function, which I
suppose is similar to apt-get install -f, but I'm a GUI person. It
reported errors, but subsequently I used the Missing Recommends and was
able to fix my Virtuoso which is now 6.1.
My dpkg.log tells a better story.
