I stopped using the PCMCIA modem as soon as I got a laptop with USB ports.
The 2 USB modems I have now, Zoom and US Robotics, work perfectly with
Gnome-PPP under Ubuntu 10.04, both at the user and the superuser level.

well as we see this is a test server I use before it hits the production

I guess Luca's wish to "unmount automatically" comes from the scary
error dialog when you just rip off an USB stick after writing to it. But
this would better be solved by more frequent syncing for filesystems on
removable media. Then it could become obsolete to "Unmount" explicitly.
