pycompile get's called from python2.7/python2.7-minimal
I don't understand this -- you mean when you install a python 2.7
enabled package, it calls pycompile (which is shippped by python-
minimal, not python2.7 or python2.7-minimal), while python-minimal
is still at 2.6? If that's the case, why

To reproduce this issue, just use F4 option in the first screen of the
installer and select Minimal virtual system. Once booted, run uname
-a. You'll see the system is using the -generic-pae kernel image
instead of the expected -virtual.

I copied your pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin to a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system and
could not reproduce the crash there. All operations went fine, including
apt-cache search foo and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
I will mark this bug as fix released until we can reproduce it somehow.
