i've installed ubuntu 10.04 today and i had the same problem.
adding nomodeset to disable kernel modesetting fixes the problem, so
this could be a video driver issue.

Hi Kamal,
I've just noticed a second side effect of the last update of the kernel.
When I suspend the machine (whether by choosing suspend in the power
menu, or by closing the computer's lid) Ubuntu freezes. I have to press
and hold down the power button in order to turn the machine off.

I just reinstalled the current openchrome driver from the repository,
rebooted, and now switching to text modes works properly, though I have
to have xorg.conf installed to get the right resolution. I'll try
rebuilding the driver according to Bug #186103 and see if that helps
this issue.

work.

Enabling debug il pam_mount I can see the command executed is
$ mount.fuse encfs#/home/ack/.crypt /home/ack/Documents/private
-onosuid,nodev,allow_root
which gives the same behaviour as described previously:
encfs on /home/ack/Documents/private type fuse.encfs

A note: mount.fuse has an hand-made command line parsing (no getopt), so it
doesn't recognize -o as an option if no space is put between option and
argument.
Without space, all options are ignored and defaults are used (hence no
allow_other).

renames/unlinks/whatever -- did not check the source).
@Jamie: I just tried with qemu.conf setting user/group to root -- the
ISO gets chown-ed to root:root, 0600. So, no dice here. Nevertheless, my
whole point is it does not
