I found a solution that worked in my upgrade. I spent the weekend upgrading:
7.04 -- 7.10 -- 8.04 -- 10.04 (Yes it was quite the adventure!)
I saw a few messages about using the old menu.lst file during the final
upgrade to 10.04 with no
options other than keeping the old file as I recall.
Xsane fails to start on my up to date Lucid x86_64. I run latest
proprietary Nvidia driver and two video cards with three displays
connected. Every other program runs fine.

fglrx fails build on 2.6.35-10-generic
After plugging and unplugging the Zen in a few times it does now seem to
connect. I was a bit surprised at this as I have made no changes to any
configuration files. I tried mtp-detect which looked OK so I tried mtp-
files and it listed out the files OK. I then did mtp-getfile and

I just checked the kernel you suggest: 2.6.38-4.31 on the ProBook 6550b.
With this kernel the machine is able to recover successfully from
suspend. I tested hibernate behavior as well, and it also works fine. So
this kernel appears to have solved the issue. Thanks!
