Just confirmed that, on the same machine, Unity runs Audacity OK. Logged
out, logged back into Unity and ran Audacity fine.
(The reason I'm running 2D at all BTW, is that I have other problems
with the desktop locking up and white windows but it managed to hold
itself together long enough to run

checked in Preferences/External and I placed Mozilla at the top of
Fabio, after I posted my last comment, I closed the terminal and closed
my laptop lid. When I reopened it, I found it never suspended at all
this time. I'm attaching the log file anyway, just in case it's useful.

well restarting portmap and nfs helped, and i don't want now to revert
back to faulty config.
i was getting this mesage when booting my diskless workstations:
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.

I just said that the problem disappeared from my system, but this turns
out only to be partly true. When the Unity desktop is on for a few hours
it seems like some processes are slowly increasing memory. Like compiz
started at 70 MB Ram, but increased to 160 MB Ram in a few hours.
