After further experimentation, I've found that the partitioning and the
use of encrypted home directory doesn't matter. I chose "use the whole
disk" automatic partitioning, and didn't select encrypted home

previously been marked for synchronization, it can't be unselected (or
the UI doesn't reflect the state change).
1. Observe that the folder has the Ubuntu One emblem
2. Right-click on folder and select Ubuntu One > Stop Synchron

Here's a smaller nicer patch to solve the problem. This one should be
compatible with upstream Debian. By compatible I mean "won't break"
upstream Debian, but the patch still only fixes the bug for upstart-
based distros like Ubuntu.

Using Additional drivers - fglrx fixes the issue, but I dont like this driver
as it is 'jerky' whereas the ubuntu driver was not
So I guess this is a ati mobility radeon hd4250 driver issue
