Changing the value to 25, or even 0 (zero), has no effect. After the
change, I tried restarting nautilus (nautilus -q) and the desktop
refreshes but the background picture stays fully opaque.

The CD driver worked for me as well. At first I thought it was because
I did the upgrades during the install. I then tried an install with no
upgrades, and had the same problem.
