This installation got even worse as keyboard bindings eventually caused
the 2 key to switch DVI output to a mode my monitor would not support.
You could work for a few minutes by resetting keyboard in System
Preferences Keyboard.but eventually typing a 2 would hang the system
display.

This very much seems like a driver specific issue with the proprietary
fglrx driver, see bug 353126.
Perhaps you can try with the free ati driver, and see whether it works
better?

As for the odp there's no conclusive answer, because top also stopped
refreshing the data. However, soffice.bin was on the top in both cpu and
memory usage, but the numbers weren't big. It didn't produce the print
job file, attached cups error log.

there is no particular reason why a fork would fail on arm, with gdm the
desktop works just fine. also i dont think it is arm specific, when i
brought it up on #ubuntu-desktop i got feedback from some others that
seemed to see the same symptoms.
it also seems that changing to another greeter
