The HP LaserJet 1200 has not very much memory. So it is very slow and easily fails with PostScript (here you really need memory). Also in PCL it is not very fast. Draft or Normal instead of high quality can make it somewhat faster. Check also your /var/log/cups/error_log whether there happened

No, adhoc connections can fail. For instance, not all wireless devices supporting sending the IBSS beacons necessary to advertise adhoc networks. The fact that the icon shows as connecting forever is probably an indication that this is the case. Regardless, the network should remain in some form
